Liverpool University

This project had originally be designed to have pre-cast brick faced lintels above the windows and door openings in addition to long runs of both straight and curved on plan areas of unsupported 'ribbon' exposed soffit brickwork.
Our involvement via a specialist brick distributor Lancashire Brick & Tile was to explore options for the Main Contractor, Architect, and Brickwork Sub-Contractor to alleviate the weight issue of the pre-cast brick option.

We successfully designed a solution using Fab-Steel Brick-Lite lintels were the concrete element was replaced using a lightweight steel fabrication which was encased in GRP and faced in special bricks which were cut down in thickness and to a L shaped profile to wrap round the soffit.

This solution allowed the units to be handled and installed manually rather than by means of mechanical installation, whilst also showing a cost saving on the concrete backed option.
